Uptown Diamond is proud to support the Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation and their wonderful cause through the donation of the Holly Rose Memorial Diamond Ring.

The ring is a 1.43ct pear shaped diamond with .53ctw of pink diamonds. It is a donation from Rick Antona of Uptown Diamond for the many mothers and women who have cancer. The Holly Rose Memorial Diamond Ring was exclusively designed by Rick Antona of Uptown Diamond for the Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation. Bidding on the ring is open to the public, and makes a great Mother’s Day Gift, or engagement or wedding ring. All the money goes directly to the patients.

Rick can be reached at rick@uptowndiamond.com or 713 360-7922 to interview him about why he designed this ring in pink gold and is donating it for cancer prevention and wellness for women, men, and children, all ages, all races, both genders.

Bidding will end on May 29, at our Fleming’s dinner. The ring appraises for $20,000 and the bidding should start at $7,000.00.

For a better description of the quality of the diamonds and exact carats, please contact Rick directly. To bid on the ring, contact Lily Paxson at lilypax@yahoo.com Every dollar will go directly to helping save a life with cancer, and preventing cancer in men, women, and children.

The ring is a custom crafted rose gold double halo ring that is beautifully garnished with a fascinating pear shaped diamond and pink diamonds on the sides of the ring.

The outer halo ribbon represents the infinite life of Holly Harwood Skolkin. Her life continues to impact and help women who suffer from breast cancer by being the inspiration for the Foundation. It is a gentle reminder to all that Holly Harwood Skolkin lives on in spirit and watches over those women who are battling breast cancer.

The inner halo ribbon represents the women who are fighting breast cancer. It also serves as a symbol to those women to continue to persevere and pay forward the gift that they have received from the Foundation by being ambassadors to the cause.

Then pink diamonds on the side of the ring represent the beauty that is within each woman who is fighting or has fought breast cancer. It is a reminder that this terrible disease can never take away from the true beauty of a woman.

The heart of the ring is fashioned with a single pear shaped diamond, which represents the Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation. The foundation continues to give women new beginnings and hope.

The Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation 501 (c) (3) helps the under and uninsured with critical illness and cancer with free reconstruction, and wellness. It has helped men, women, and children with physical deformities due to birth or illness.

The foundation was formed by Dr. Franklin and Cindi Rose to honor and in memory of Cindi’s sister, Holly Harwood Skolkin, who battled stage 4 cancer with courage and love. Holly’s example proved that those who have goals, support, and prayer, battle their physical health opportunity with longer lives. By making those feel “whole”, the HRRF has helped over 100 people in its 8 years of existence with support, wigs, permanent eyebrows, reconstruction, education, research, prevention of cancer, outreach, alternative treatments when requested, world-wide. Holly and Tracey’s examples of giving love to family and community while battling illness has made a lasting example to the world of living your highest path. Fleming’s Prime Steak & Wine Bar as well as United Airlines (formerly Continental) have made this vision possible, of assisting those who have cancer and other illness’s stay well longer.

To get involved or to refer a possible patient, please contact Lily Paxson, new Executive Director at lilypax@yahoo.com or call 713-622-3610 and ask for Autumn Ayers, assistant to Dr. Franklin A. Rose.

Silhouettes, also called paper-profiles, will be cut, before your eyes at For Heaven’s Sake in Beaumont, Tuesday, Feb. 12, from noon to 5:30, & see for yourself the lost art of hand-cutting paper profile portraits called silhouettes by the French.

To assure a spot with the talented silhouettest Cindi, call For Heaven’s Sake located at 4190 Calder at 409-898-3340 or e-mail them at fhsbeaumont@aol.com

Cindi (formerly Harwood) Rose began doing this art, after discovering at 8 years old that her portraits of animals and people were in high demand. At “For Heaven’s Sake” they will be only $35 each person, with extra copies at $10 a person. Lovely frames and mats will be on hand from $4 to $50. Thus, you can get one for yourself, a loved one, and grandparents. Engaged couples can do one together, and people can have one done to use as a logo! In order to share the love, proceeds for the day will benefit cancer patients & the Silhouettes for Survivors program.

Rose, who is considered the world’s “foremost living silhouette artist” uses natural talents and surgical scissors to capture a likeness, without a sketch or shadow. This insures that the work will have fine-details and embellishments such as stylish hair-dos, ribbons, neck-ties, head-bands, and necklaces with the best details, heirloom quality, and a unique and perfect Valentine’s Gift; that unlike flowers and candy, will be treasured forever.

C. H. Rose does.

There are only around 25 authentic practicing silhouette artists in the world. A silhouette gift lasts forever, and will show that your love will last forever.

SILHOUETTE ARTIST, CO-FOUNDER HOLLY ROSE RIBBON FOUNDATION

Happy Holidays! In our 6th Annual Holiday Values issue, we continue our fun tradition of asking notable Houstonians to share their “words of wisdom” with our readers by selecting a “value” that is meaningful to them and writing an essay. As yet another year comes to a close, it’s the opportune time to reflect about what is valuable to us and to look with hope and a renewed spirit toward the future. May your holidays be filled with blessings as you spend time with family, friends, those in need and of course, your pets.
Holiday Food for Thought – By Michelle Mantor

Nurturing is nourishing and feeding others in body, mind and soul. By doing this, in turn, you reap the rewards of watching seeds grow (real and in the form of ideas), others blossom, which in turn, makes you thrive. As founder of The Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation 501( c )( 3 ), which offers free post reconstruction, outreach, wigs, to those under and un-insured with cancer, I have found that humans nurtured by others live longer and want to live longer. I learned this from my beloved sister, Holly Harwood Skolkin, who with critical sickness of cancer, survived stage 4 cancer 15 years, by giving to others and allowing others to nurture her. She will always be my inspiration and my highest example of unconditional love, someone who could nurture others with her open heart and non-stoppable goodness. Holly Dolly, my Holly Lama, allowed others to grow by allowing them to give her love.

Caring and nurturing a pet, improves a human’s life. Some pets are brought to assisted living homes for cuddling and petting. The look of a dog’s loving eyes can make a person’s day, or the way that a pet owner is greeted by his/her pet the moment they come home. Many of my friends did not have children and it is through excellent care of their pets they have learned the gift of nurturing.

I love all things of nature and nurture. My biggest pleasure was having my children, Erica 29, and Ben, 27, as well as preparing meals daily for my husband, Franklin Rose. If he did not praise my culinary talents which feed my spirit, I would not take the care to please him by nurturing his body and mind with my healthy meals. The herbs often are grown in my garden, and I take care to extract the juices from live plants so it’s organic and fresh!

No matter how you look at it, when you give to others, you are giving to yourself. This includes a talent you may share, or your life’s work, as long as it improves the world we live in, and is for the highest good. In one sentence I would sum up nurturing as being courteous to all things living: human, animal, plant, and mineral, and thus, you are nurturing the planet, and your own spirit. – Cindi Rose

Silhouette Artist Cindi Harwood Rose fondly remembers making homemade dolls with her sisters Holly and Bonny. The three little girls would use rocks and scrap materials to create their little playthings. It was just one of the simple and artistic family activities she enjoyed growing up in her Houston home.

“Our mom would sit with us for hours doing fabulous art projects. In one way, I was being trained to be skilled with pen, paintbrush, pastel and scissors,” recalls Rose. “But I’ve always been fascinated with drawing by scissors, cutting out paper dolls and hearts when I was three years old, cracking paint off and sculpting on the walls to my parents’ dismay with the rounded-edge of scissors”. Scissors are Rose’s trademark tools. She is now known around the globe for her talent and skill in paper cutting elegant silhouettes, a disappearing art with roots in ancient China and France.

She has done in-person silhouettes of a range of public figures including Barbara Bush, Queen Elizabeth, singer Tony Bennett, violinist Itzhak Perlman and movie star Ashley Judd. “This art gives me great joy because it opens up a whole world,” Rose says. “Facial features can reveal a lot about a person. When I’m doing someone’s silhouette, I need to capture their personality so I have to connect with them.”

Silhouette Artists Cindi visits and cuts a darling girls silhouette

SILHOUETTES & CHILDREN
Here in Houston, Rose’s delicate silhouettes hang on the walls of hundreds of homes as heirloom keepsakes. They are especially popular as reasonably priced gifts for grandparents. For $35, she takes her scissors and vintage paper, and snips away a profile in a matter of minutes. Children are fascinated to watch her use her magic scissors to form their likeness out of black paper.

“I do well with children. I educate them while they watch me do their silhouettes. I tell them ‘Everybody has a magic wand.’ For me, it’s scissors and for them it’s a sport or dance,” she says. “The amazing part is children don’t have to sit still, and can come dirty in a T-shirt! Parents can tell me how they want the hair and clothes to appear.”
Rose is hired to create silhouettes for guests at weddings, business conventions, school fundraisers and birthday parties. She can be booked by playgroups and private homes with a minimum of 20 spots reserved.

She donates all proceeds to the Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation, an organization she established that provides free reconstructive surgery to uninsured breast cancer survivors. The foundation bears her sister’s name – Holly Harwood Skolkin passed away earlier this year after a long battle with breast cancer.

Rose will be at Fundamentally Toys on Rice Boulevard on Sunday, December 2 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Reservations are required. Please call 713-524-4400 ahead of time since slots fill up fast. For Rose’s schedule for the rest of the holiday season, see the bottom of this article.

SCHOOLS, DISNEY & FAMILY
Rose says she has been drawing “non-stop” since she was in kindergarten, earning quarters for her artwork of pets, kids and landscapes.

At Bellaire High School, she used her art to get high marks. “I would illustrate everything from clothing from other countries, to Texas pioneers, or the constellation,” she says. “It was like a magic trick. I would make an A, even in math or Spanish, by just drawing something about the subject.”
She discovered her passion while working at Astroworld as a teenager. She was only 15 years old when she started drawing portraits at Astroworld for a Walt Disney art company. While walking past various art concession stands, she witnessed the work of a silhouette artist from France and she knew she found her calling.

“Silhouette art is not just drawing a shadow. A shadow is just blocked light and can be distorted. Silhouette artists need to be life artists first. They need to be able to draw everything they see and capture a spirit,” she says. “I taught myself how to cut ruffles, bows, shirts, ribbons, glasses, hats, couples together, pets, all from practice. I just can see things. I’m good at seeing shape, form and contour and cutting out interior details,” she says.

Her work was so impressive, she was flown to Disneyland to do her silhouette artistry. It became her summer job through high school and college, helping pay for her tuition at the University of Texas in Austin.

Rose also awed audiences and art critics with her speed. At Disney, she was able to create 600 silhouettes per day. She set a record with the San Antonio Express News in the early 1980s cutting out 144 silhouettes in one hour – that’s more than two silhouettes per minute!

After getting her degrees in art and journalism, she married noted plastic surgeon Dr. Franklin Rose. They have two children, 29-year-old Erica and 27-year-old Ben.

Founded by Dr. Franklin Rose and Cindi Harwood Rose, the Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation provides free reconstructive surgery to post-cancer patients who are not able to afford health insurance.

From SHELBY’S SOCIAL DIARY – Inspirational 14-year cancer battle of Holly Harwood Skolkin brings song, tributes & glamorous crowd – By Shelby Hodge

“In song and in words, the annual Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation spring dinner at Fleming’s celebrated the memory of Holly Harwood Skolkin, sister of Cindi Harwood Rose who with her husband, plastic surgeon Dr. Franklin Rose, created the non-profit. Skolkin died of breast cancer in February after a 14-year battle with the disease.

Her brave struggle was inspiration for the foundation, which was renamed, from the original Rose Ribbon Foundation, following her death.

As is tradition, the lavish dinner for 100 was hosted and underwritten entirely by Fleming’s operational partner Sam Governale, who continues support begun by Maeve Pesquera several years ago.

With the Rose family involvement, the evening always attracts a glamorous, colorful crowd that on Tuesday night was led by dinner chairs Shayna Melcher and Jessica Rossman, channeling a youthful Ava Gardner.

Kristine Mills – Silhouette

This evening had a particularly serious side with Kristine Mills performing a song she had written in Skolkin’s memory and dinner honoree Kelli Cohen Fein, taking the opportunity to give a heartfelt remembrance of and tribute to Skolkin. (Before the party got rolling, she said that she had accepted the honor in order to turn the attention to the memory of her late friend.) Skolkin’s husband, Dr. Mark Skolkin, shared words in her honor as well.

The party crowd included United Airlines exec and benefit auctioneer Dave Hilfman; Lucho’s Hector Villarreal, who provided his signature cigars for the gents in the house; Gordon Bethune, who did his share of bidding in the live auction; and Marc Melcher there supporting Shayna.

Relishing the amazing dinner were Martin Fein, Caroline and Gary Kenney, Joanna Barrett, Karen and Roland Garcia, Maria Bush, Debbie and Rudy Festari, Trish Rauch, Ben Rose, Angelica and Ed Chapman, Susan and Dan Biggio, Jared Lang and Cenk and Catherine Ozdogan.” – Via Houston CultureMap

Since its inception in Houston, Texas, in 2005, the Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation, in collaboration with Cindi Rose, Dr. Franklin Rose and Tony Rotondo, CEO of the First Street Surgical Center, has helped breast cancer survivors, including women, men and children receive free reconstructive surgery.

Contributions to the Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation provide help for uninsured and under-insured cancer patients of all ages and genders including psychological support, alternative wellness treatments, free reconstructive surgery and free wigs in the US and globally.

The Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation was established in 2005 by well-known, board certified Houston plastic surgeon, Dr. Franklin Rose and silhouette artist Cindi Harwood Rose, the formerly-named Rose Ribbon Foundation continues to provide free reconstructive surgery and other services to post-cancer patients who are not able to afford health insurance.

Several years ago, Cindi Rose’s sister, Holly Harwood Skolkin, was diagnosed with breast cancer and she was told she had three months to live. After learning of their sister’s illness and that more than 45 million such Americans are without health insurance, Dr. Franklin Rose and Cindi Harwood Rose made it their mission to help those in need. Today, the Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation, a 501 (c) (3) organization, underwrites reconstruction for dozens of these patients each year.

At the Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation’s fund-raiser, hosts Karen and Roland Garcia opened their home to more than 250 costumed guests who were in for quite a fright. The residence had been turned into a full-fledged haunted house with skeletons, spiders and gravestones galore. Cindi Rose was on hand to create silhouettes, and Herb Hochman performed astrology readings.

Review the event photos and write up in PaperCity Magazine: http://www.papercitymag.com/Parties/Archives/5951/Holly-Rose-Ribbon-Foundation%E2%80%99s-Halloween-Bash/

For all the commercial and charity-generated Halloween parties going on in recent days, probably none could top the annual invitation-only bash that Karen and Roland Garcia held at their Memorial area estate Saturday night.

Think ghosts and goblins hanging from trees, vast stretches of lawn transformed into a graveyard complete with billowing fog and dead bodies. Add more than 250 costumed party animals and you get the picture. Diversions that kept the crowd rocking into the wee morning hours:

* A light show by LD Systems choreographed to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and to the Rocky Horror Picture Show‘s “Time Warp.”

* A montage of horror movies shown on a 15 X 20 outdoor screen and on TVs in the house.

* Silhouette-cutting by Cindi Rose.

* Astrology readings by Herb Hochman.

* Frightening foodie delights from Barbara McKnight‘s Catering by Culinaire.

* Gene Wu channeling Jeremy Lin, Erica Rose beguiling as a witch, Dan Kamin as Popeye, etc.

The hobgoblin parade included co-hosts Kristin Garcia and fiance Aaron Blomquist, Philamena and Arthur Baird, Erica Rose, Miya Shay, City Councilmen Stephen Costello and Ed Gonzalez, Metro board chairman Gilbert Garcia, Kay and Fred Zeidman, Shirley and Jim Dannenbaum and so many more.
